Havana
is a fascinating and pulsating city. Alejo Carpentier the
famous Cuban writer describes the singularity of Havana with
the words Real Maravilloso, expressing something like "wonderful
reality". The Cuban seaport, situated in the Caribbean, casts
a spell on visitors with its charm, sensuality, music, colours
and smells. The city of pillars has many faces: historical
colonial buildings lie next to Art Nouveau, neoclassicism
or Art Deco houses, but also multi-storey buildings from the
fifties and the changing architecture of urban housing of
various construction periods shape the cityscape. Apart from
the Spanish and African influences, the Chinese Diaspora adds
its very own special charm to some city quarters. Oak tree
lined Avenidas alternate with narrow, labyrinth like alleys
and streets. Enchanting parks and green spaces as well as
historical plazas and of course the mystical seaside avenue
Malecón - "the balcony to the ocean" - invite to linger. Here
and in the streets of the Barrios, life is pulsating and although
everyday Cuban life has its downsides, people enjoy life to
the full and are a communicative sort like no one else.
